Carried Home Exhibition at Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA)
Woodworking artist and Artist Innovation grant recipient Luke Jenkins explores themes of migration, adaptation, and shared environments in his exhibition, “Carried Home” at Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA). The unique story of Cryptotermes brevis, a termite originating in the dry Atacama Desert of Chile, anchors the exhibition; the termite migrated from Chile to South Florida via wooden ships and only survives the humid Florida environment by living in kiln-fired wood used for buildings. The exhibition includes carved wood pieces, ceramics, and paper-based art along with reworked pieces made from local, reclaimed wood marked by termite activity. “Carried Home” is on view through Sept. 12.
