Accessibility Statement
Accessibility Statement for ArtCalendar.com
The Broward Cultural Division is committed to ensuring that ArtsCalendar.com is accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. We are continually improving the user experience for all visitors and applying the relevant accessibility standards.
Our commitment
We want every resident and visitor to be able to find events, organizations, venues, artists and opportunities on this site, regardless of ability or the technology they use. Accessibility is part of how the site is designed, built and maintained, not an afterthought.
Conformance status
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. They define three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA and Level AAA. Arts Calendar Broward County is designed to conform with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not yet fully conform to the standard; we identify those parts below and are working to resolve them.
Measures we take
- Semantic page structure with meaningful headings, landmarks and labelled navigation so screen-reader users can move through each page efficiently.
- Keyboard access to all menus, search filters, forms, dialogs and the “add to calendar” and sharing controls, with a visible focus indicator.
- Colour contrast that meets or exceeds the 4.5:1 ratio for text and 3:1 for interface components, checked as part of the site’s design tools.
- Text alternatives for images, including the images that event organizers and artists upload, which the submission forms prompt them to describe.
- Resizable text and layouts that reflow on phones, tablets and enlarged desktop displays without loss of content or function.
- Captions or transcripts requested for video content submitted by organizations.
- Accessibility information on event and venue pages, such as wheelchair access, assisted listening, captioning and sign-language interpretation, where the organizer has provided it.
- Regular reviews of new features against WCAG 2.1 AA before release.
Content provided by others
Much of the content on this site, including event descriptions, images and documents, is submitted by arts organizations, venues and artists in Broward County. We give contributors guidance on writing accessible listings, but we cannot guarantee the accessibility of every item they supply. If you encounter a listing that is difficult to use, tell us and we will work with the contributor to correct it.
Known limitations
Despite our efforts, some content may not yet be fully accessible:
- Some older images and PDF documents supplied by contributors may lack text alternatives or tagged structure.
- Third-party ticketing, mapping and video services linked from event pages are outside our control and may not meet the same standard.
- Some archived listings migrated from the previous version of this site may retain formatting from that system.
We are addressing these as they are identified.
Compatibility with browsers and assistive technology
The site is designed to work with current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge, and with common screen readers including NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver, on desktop and mobile devices. It is not designed for browsers more than three major versions old.
Technical specifications
Accessibility of this site relies on HTML, WAI-ARIA, CSS and JavaScript. These technologies are relied upon for conformance with the accessibility standards used.
